Overview

A wagon train heads west from Independence, Mo., along the Oregon Trail, led by proud cowboy Clint Belmet. On board are feisty young widow Nancy Wellington and her toddler, Sonny, as well as the older Abby Masters, who begins a romance with scout Jim Burch. Along the way, the wagon train battles Indians led by Kenneth Murdock, a trapper who doesn't welcome competition for Oregon's lucrative fur trade. Wagon Wheels is a 1934 remake of 1931's Fighting Caravans, using stock footage from the original.

It isn't very often that you find a credit for "vocal interpolations" on a film, but this little pioneering western has that very thing! It also indicates that there may be a might crooning going on as Randolph Scott escorts Gail Patrick and her wagon train across hostile terrain, through blizzards and against hostile Apache. There is something engagingly sheepish about the star, he is like a lovestruck calf as he slowly falls for the feisty lady and at under an hour, this manages to pack quite a lot in before building nicely to a creatively staged and lively conclusion. The production is certainly a bit basic, but it's an enjoyable action packed adventure that I rather enjoyed.
